Plant Description
Ganoderma lucidum is a species of mushroom in the Ganodermataceae family. It grows from June to November in tropical to temperate regions, on the trunks of wild oaks or plums. It has a smooth, semi-circular and partially bulging cap. It measures 15 to 30 cm in diameter. It is red-brown in color and has an irregular stem.
Geographical origin
Originating from China, the Ganoderma lucidum has over 50 different varieties. The majority grow in tropical regions of Asia. Once only available in the wild, Ganoderma lucidum is now cultivated to meet the growing global demand.
History
Ganoderma lucidum is often referred to as the mushroom of longevity or immortality. Prized in Asia for thousands of years by wealthy people, it is traditionally used to give a boost of vitality and fight against aging. Its anti-aging potential was allegedly discovered in 2730 B.C. by the Chinese herbalist Shen Nong.
Shen Nong, the author of the first book of traditional Chinese medicine, presented Ganoderma lucidum as the best of the superior medicinal plants. Ganoderma lucidum is now an essential part of traditional Chinese medicine.
